She had a face that made me think “I’d love our daughter’s face to look like hers”. That scene where the baby, say around 2–4 years old, looks like the mother — like 75%. But the other 25% tells you clearly that I’m the dad. She would get a bit of me, like the rounds of the face I and my siblings have. Got it from Mum.

Mum once told a story about her friend coming to visit her for the first time at some point when I was around 7–12 years old. She said the friend recounted to her that she was unsure if she was in the right house when she first stepped through the gate, but I was the first person she saw in the compound and when I popped out, she saw my face and knew she was in the correct compound. I looked like Mum. I don’t anymore, the past 5 years have put a mask on it, but I see it when I look deep in the mirror.

Anyways, she was beautiful really. It was the straights and triangles of her face, not the rounds. She had that faux-upset frown on. Complaining to the girl at the counter “You people only have Yale bread. Yale bread is not sweet. I want to use it to eat bread and beans”. We made eye contact as she said that sentence, she did not immediately look away. Had me thinking maybe I should eat bread and beans. Mum had brought out the beans from yesterday out the freezer and I’ve avoided it since morning, it’s close to 4 pm now, and I haven’t eaten a proper meal today.

I don’t want to eat beans, but if I keep this memory of this young lady in my head long enough, it will carry me through putting a few spoons in my mouth, and that Jendol sliced bread on the dining table will probably not be sweet. Sliced bread is never as sweet as its unsliced version.

I did not talk to her, she had a face that was bang in my alley, but a body like she was married. I could have gone to find out. I didn’t. Was dropping off water with Dad. I dunno mehn. Well, the world is full of beauty, that’s for sure. I’ll come across another. I gotta be ready then. Gotta fix this mess of a mind first.
